Every February there’s an enthusiastic feeling that this will be the most successful season ever! How do we get to do that? Lots of plannig…and lots of windowsills covered with pots!
Growing Indoors
There’s two ways to grow indoors: Grow directly in pots or grow in propagators to re-plant later. I use a mix of both as it depends on the type of seed.
I.e. a sunflower will go in a yoghurt pot (tall, thin, like an Onken) within a yoghurt pot (short and wide, like a Greek Yoghurt) so they can be watered frequently without spoiling the soil and replanted outdoors as soon as they’ve outgrown their pots. Make sure to punch some holes on the inner pot!
I.e. a chilli plant will go in a propagator by the windowsill as it takes a really long time to grow enough to be replanted.
February Seeds
Chilli varieties – they take so long to grow I plant them in February and they won’t be going outside at all. Grow in a covered propagator and do not expect any shoots for at least 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer.
Cucumber – plant in a yoghurt pot-in-a-pot, water frequently and keep in a very sunny window.
Basil – on a kitchen windowsill, water frequently and plant directly in its final position (I.e. NIDO powder cans)
Parsley – on a windowsill, water frequently and plant directly in a small/medium sized pot.
Brussell Sprouts – they take long to grow so the temptation to put them in a propagator is strong but I tend to use yoghurt pot-in-a-pot as they get quite tall quickly when they shoot up.
Carrots – outside on a table in small planting pots, far from slugs and water well!
Oregano – on a windowsill, in a strawberry pot within a meat tray from the supermarket.
Courgette – plant in a yoghurt pot-in-a-pot, water frequently and keep in a very sunny window.
Parsnip – outside on a table in small planting pots, far from slugs and water well!
Enjoy planting – more specific tips in the coming weeks!
